VTEX and Shopify are two of the most popular eCommerce platforms. I will explain some of the differences between one and other. At MagmaLabs we use both, so we have to be very objective when it comes to defining which platform will be used in each of our client’s projects.
VTEX vs Shopify – Recent Growth
On the one hand, VTEX has been growing exponentially in LATAM and some other countries like USA, Portugal, and England. VTEX is a platform oriented to medium and big size companies. VTEX can fit any strategy and market segment. it is sufficiently robust to help any business grow. Recently, VTEX was named as a “Niche Player” at the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce Providers in a very competitive position in comparison with other niche players. On the other side, Shopify has been extremely well positioned for some years now. It provides ease and simplicity when creating a store, this is why it is the startups’ favorite platform. Shopify is on Gartner Magic Quadrant too, in a “Niche Player” position just behind VTEX considering vision completeness.
VTEX vs Shopify – Checkout
One of the most important things about an eCommerce is the customer experience throughout the entire shopping process, especially during the checkout.
VTEX owns a globally patented checkout called SmartCheckout, a one-click-buy without password process that is used to increase up to 30% the conversion rate because every repurchase uses the data stored from the first purchase.
Also, VTEX is the only commerce platform PCI Certified; this implies an outstanding security level for data security and payment transaction.
By its side, Shopify is including PCI solutions that allow you to increase the conversion rate of your store. If you need some kind of customization, we must wait for Shopify to develop it. Some of the disadvantages of Shopify is that if you do not have the premium version, the URL checkout will be “shopifycheckout.com” which can cause confusion to the client and directly affect the conversion rate.
VTEX vs Shopify – Integrations
VTEX is an API based platform that allows the merchant to interconnect the eCommerce to any backoffice systems like ERPs, WMSs, Chats, Marketing Automation Platforms and even in-house built backoffice systems. All the APIs are public and can be found at https://help.vtex.com/.
In the case of Shopify they have API’s public too, the only difference is the API architecture. In Shopify you need to learn more about the application. You should keep in mind that developing plugin solutions to make integrations with client’s systems is more expensive.
VTEX vs Shopify – CMS and Products
VTEX has a very flexible CMS (Content Management System) module where you can watch the whole structure of your site like: the header, footer, main content, not found page, product list, product detail page, etc., or just add your custom view. Another good thing about VTEX is that it allows you to build fully customizable templates and it is not limited to a single template. You can develop tools that help you grow your sales.
Also, VTEX has a Catalog Module
where you can manage all products, see their SKUs’ lists, all the specifications, and even add images to SKUs. It’s possible to set different prices and inventories for any given SKU; this implies a more flexible way to manage your online store.
Shopify has fully customizable templates provided for free to use with your account, or if you want you can build your own. For a reasonable price, you can use a flexible layout of dynamic content via Liquid templating language. Also, you can add, edit and list all products with a drag and drop system.
VTEX vs Shopify – Orders
The OMS (Order Management System) Module
on VTEX allows you to see and manage all orders; you can even filter these orders by date of delivery, invoice, channels, by status, etc.
Inside of each order, you have the Order Flow
where you can interact with the order process; furthermore, it shows a timeline for checking all movements with detail, you can communicate with your clients through this module, and view all messages.
In Shopify OMS Module
you can track payment orders and shipping status with detailed reports, it allows customized filtering, exporting orders in CSV format, and sending real-time notifications using WebHooks.
VTEX vs Shopify – eCommerce marketing
VTEX has a module called Rates and Benefits,
where all coupons and promotions can be added. They have pre-defined promotions like regular price, buy together, more for less, progressive discount and buy and get; you can also go to the pricing module where you can modify all product prices and use the Psychological Price
, and establish rules for pricing.
On the other hand, the CMS of Shopify can create coupon codes for percentage or a specific fixed amount off, free shipping, etc. You can enter comparison prices to indicate sales or to set you apart from the competition. Shopify’s blog and “Guru” coaches provide tips and tricks to get more sales.
This was just a brief comparison between two powerful platforms, so you can choose the correct option for you keeping in mind these important points for any eCommerce platform. If you wish to talk more in-depth about your project and which of these two platforms would work best for you.
